The car community is now on Toyota’s case about excessive silicone use in and around the GR86's engine

Earlier this month, stories about a blown engine in a new 2022 Toyota GR86 made headlines on the web. In a nutshell, the owner expected that his engine would be replaced under warranty, but Toyota denied the claim. Within days, Toyota changed its mind and now owners and enthusiasts are digging for answers.

At first, Toyota claimed that the owner had abused their car tracking it and allegedly drifting with a RWD sports car that the automaker markets as essentially being designed for such activities. This explains why Toyota decided to fix the engine. This situation spawned curiosity and interest in what occurred to the Subaru FA24D engine.

It was discovered that there was an unusual amount of silicone or RTV in the GR86’s oil pan and oil pickup. The sealant replaces a conventional gasket for all kinds of reasons but the issue, as discovered in this video, is that there seems to be too much of it and that some of it isn’t sticking to the surfaces it was applied on.

The video depicts a mechanic removing the oil pan and discovering an alarming amount of silicone in both the oil pan and pickup. Clearly, this is not normal and could signal a serious problem for Toyota and Subaru, and BRZ and GR86 owners.
